The Guyana Police Force’s Office of Professional Responsibility and the Regional Security System have completed their probe of the Police shooting death of 21-year-old Ronaldo Peters. The file will be submitted to the Director of Public Prosecutions by tomorrow for official advice on the charge to be filed in the Court.
Peters was shot dead by a Police Sergeant two Mondays ago at Half Mile, Wismar in Linden. He was shot to the abdomen, according to a post-mortem examination. A CCTV recording of the incident showed the Police Sergeant dragging the injured youth and dumping him into the back of an unmarked mini-bus after the shooting.
The Police Sergeant was at the time dressed in plain clothes. It was also reported that after he drove off with the injured man, he drove around Wismar before eventually going to the Police Station in the area, where the injured man was then placed in a Police vehicle and eventually taken to the Mackenzie Hospital where he was pronounced dead.
His death led to protests in the town the following day and it was during those protests that the other man, 32-year-old, Keon Fogenay, was shot to the head as the Police tried to disperse a crowd of protesters. The investigation into Fogenay’s death is ongoing as additional eyewitnesses are still in the process of providing their statements to the investigators.
Both men were laid to rest on Sunday. The Guyana Police Force has indicated that the full report of the Regional Security System will be released on Friday.
