AG’s Chambers says Police operation at home of Melly Mel’s mother was legally done and in compliance with the Constitution

The Attorney General’s Chambers has responded to the letter that was sent to the Acting Police Commissioner by Attorneys for Rights Activist, Melissa Atwell, seeking information on the Police operation that was conducted at the home of the activist’s mother.

In the response, which was signed by Principal Legal Advisor in the Attorney General’s Office, Ronetta Sargeant, it relayed that the Chambers was informed thatbased on reasonable grounds for suspecting that an offence against the Narcotics Act was being committed at the residence in Eccles, an authorized officer of the Guyana Police Force applied for and obtained a warrant from the Diamond Magistrates’ Court to enter and search the premises.

The Attorney General’s Office said the search was carried out for 50 minutes on the 17th September in compliance with the law. The letter from the Attorney General’s Chambers also claimed that the Chambers was informed that upon completion of the search, Atwell’s mother was asked whether she was satisfied with the conduct of the officers who carried out the search, and she responded in the affirmative.

The AG’s office said the search was video recorded and the exchange between the main occupant of the house and the lead investigator was also recorded. The letter stated that the investigations are still ongoing although there was nothing found at the property.

The Attorney General Office also stated that based on the information it received from the Police, the police officers involved in the raid were unaware of the relations of the occupants of the house and any other person, adding that the allegations of a breach of constitutional rights is fully denied.

The Attorney General’s Chambers said the Guyana Police Force will continue to discharge its duties without fear or favour and in due compliance with the Constitution. The AG’s Chambers also indicated that any legal proceedings instituted against the state will be stoutly defended.

The letter from the Attorney General’s Chambers was also copied to the Acting Commissioner of Police and had a copy of a search warrant attached to it.

The copied warrant showed the Magisterial District of Georgetown being scratched out at the top and replaced with a handwritten East Bank, and to the bottom, a 2022 date was scratched out and replaced with the 17th September 2024 date.
