Attorney General Anil Nandlall has defended the move by the Guyana Police Force to file terrorism charges against persons who were arrested in connection with last Monday’s unrest and looting in some parts of the country.
More than forty persons have been charged and remanded to prison for inciting public terror after violent protest erupted following reports on the findings of the post-mortem examination of the remains of of 11-year-old Adriana Younge, who was found dead in a hotel pool at Tuschen. The three foreign independent pathologists found that she died by drowning.
On his programme last evening, Mr. Nandlall said the charges filed against those who are suspected to have been part of the unrest, are in accordance with local laws.
“I say to those who say that this is a wrong charge, that we couldn’t find a better charge there could not have been a more appropriate charge,” Mr. Nandlall declared.

According to the Attorney General, the law made clear that whoever with intent to strike terror in the people or does any act or thing in such a manner as to cause or likely to cause death or injury to any person(s), or loss of or damage to or destruction of property, commits a terrorist act. Therefore, the AG believes the charges are commensurate with the acts committed.
“Which part of this here is excessive, whosever with the intent to strike terror in people, when you light the road afire and you robbing everybody that pass on the road, when you go in people supermarket and you rob everybody, when you get cutlass and chopping vagrants on the road, what you intend to do, if not to strike terror in people,” Mr. Nandlall questioned.
Mr. Nandlall said the charges were also to caution others that unrest and looting will be swiftly addressed.
“You go and ask the people who are the victims, ask the people who were on the roadways, in the lines, in the properties that were being robbed, ask them if they didn’t experience intense and overwhelming fear,” the Attorney General stated.
Mr. Nandlall said while persons have a right to protest, persons will not be allowed to loot and drive fear into other citizens and business owners.
