Co-founders and former political leaders of A New and United Guyana, Senior Counsel Timothy Jonas and Senior Counsel Ralph Ramkarran have both announced their resignations from the party.
The resignation from the two came hours ANUG, under its current leadership, announced that it was teaming up with the recently formed We Invest in Nationhood (WIN) party for the upcoming elections.
WIN is headed by billionaire businessman, Azruddin Mohamed, who remains sanctioned by the US Government over allegations of tax evasion and gold under declaration. He is also facing tax evasion charges in the local Courts over the importation of a luxury car four years ago.
As Mohamed forges ahead with his political campaign for the upcoming elections, some persons remain concerned about whether they could face a backlash from the US over any ties to the sanctioned businessman.
Jonas and Ramkarran did not provide any reasons for their resignations.
In a Facebook post, Mr. Jonas only stated that he has resigned from ANUG today. In an earlier post, Mr. Ramkarran admitted that he has not been active in the party and has not paid his party dues in almost five years, but he said if it is that he still remains on record as a member of the party, he giving notice of his resignation.
In an early morning statement announcing the alliance between ANUG and WIN, the two parties said the step reinforces the “growing strength and momentum of the WIN campaign. With ANUG’s addition under the WIN banner, the movement gains valuable electoral experience and national reach, making ANUG the first political party to officially join the WIN platform”.
