Mohamed and workers to face unlawful gun possession and obstruct the course of justice charges

Opposition Leader Azruddin Mohamed and his workers, Mario Mohammed and Eugene Thorne are expected to be taken before the Court tomorrow to face charges related to that Monday night incident outside the home of the Special Branch Head, Senior Superintent of Police, Prem Narine.

The Director of Public Prosecutions has advised that the three be jointly charged for unlawful possession of a firearm without a license, unlawful possession of ammunition without a licence and attempt to obstruct the course of justice.

The advice from the DPP was communicated to the Police this evening.

Opposition Leader, Azruddin Mohamed and his two workers have been in Police custody since being arrested late on Monday night.

The Police arrested the three men on allegations of unlawful possession of a firearm and unlawfully discharging a firearm. However, there was no recommendation by the DPP for any charge related to discharging a firearm.

Mohamed through his Attorney has denied all of the allegations.

The Opposition Leader and his two workers were in a black Toyota motor car late on Monday night when they reportedly drove pass the home of the Special Branch Head in a reported effort, according to Mr. Mohamed, to document the number of Police Officers stationed outside the home. He saw it as an abuse of state resources.

The Special Branch Head, Prem Narine, told investigators that he opened fire on the car after hearing a sound that was similar to that of a gunshot, according to a Police report.

The car with the Opposition Leader and his two workers was intercepted and the three were taken into custody. A number of bullet holes could be seen on the car.

Mohamed has denied that anyone in the car fired any weapon. He has also claimed that the weapon that the Police stated was found in the car was planted there by the Police.

Mohamed is currently before the Court along with his father facing an extradition hearing. The Special Branch Head is the key witness in that ongoing extradition hearing.
