Education Ministry to accommodate displaced Mae’s students at public schools

The Education Ministry has announced its full support to ensure that the students of Mae’s School, which was gutted by fire this morning, will be accommodated at public schools to continue their education seamlessly, especially those preparing for the NGSA and CXC examinations.

Education Minister Priya Manickchand was at the scene this morning as firemen battled the blaze. She was spotted comforting both students and teachers of the private school. A number of Ministry of Education officials also visited the scene.

Minister Manickchand said the welfare of the students will be addressed by her Ministry and the Guyana Government will also lend its full support. There were more than 1000 students enrolled at the school.

“The Mae’s School has contributed significantly to the country, both at the academic level and in every other way and it has also been a school we can count on to participate in activities. I know they have recently changed ownership, but for us the important thing is that as far as we have been advised every child is out and there was no children in the school, but full support in terms of placing these children, getting the Grade Six, we are couple of weeks out from Grade Six, and making sure they are comfortable and seated and making sure the CXC children are also provided for, and so as I speak, our Exams Division is looking at two places to make that determination and they will get our full support”, Manickchand said.

The Education Minister revealed that her two children are both former students of the school and the tragedy of the school being completely gutted is sad and heartbreaking.

She said the Government of Guyana remains committed to providing the necessary assistance to the Mae’s School.

The Ministry of Education said it will continue to engage with the school’s administration, parents, and other stakeholders to ensure a smooth transition for the affected students and to provide ongoing support as needed.

The Mae’s School was established in 1992 and has been one of the leading private schools in the country, catering for students at the nursery to secondary levels.
