Fourth person charged in airport gold smuggling case

A fourth person has been arrested and charged in connection with the recent attempt by a mother and daughter and one of their employees to smuggle more than US$500,000 worth of gold jewellery through the Cheddi Jagan International Airport. 

US based, Guyanese businessman, Saffee Ahmad, was arrested by the Major Crimes Unit and appeared in Court on Tuesday to face the charge of exporting gold without a license. 

He pleaded not guilty to the charge and was granted bail in the sum of $600,000.  

Two weeks ago, Ahmad’s wife and daughter along with an employee of the family, were held at the Cheddi Jagan Airport with 240 ounces of gold jewelry disguised as silver.  

The three were charged and also granted bail in the sum of $600,000 each.  

Since then, the Government has been stepping up its monitoring of attempts at gold smuggling
