General Secretary of the People’s Progressive Party, Vice President Bharrat Jagdeo has declared that his party is not worried about businessman Azruddin Mohamed entering the political race. He said Mr. Mohamed continues to receive “fake” support.
Describing the businessman and his family as a “criminal cabal”, Mr. Jagdeo need to know the true nature of the business family before offering their support to Azruddin Mohamed.
The Mohameds shared close ties with the PPP over the years and was one of the largest donors to the party over the years. The elder Mohamed, Nazar Mohamed, was a candidate for the PPP at the last local government elections.
However, the fallout between the family and the PPP continues. The father and son and their businesses were sanctioned last year by the US Government over claims of gold under-declaration and tax evasion.
The son, Azruddin Mohamed, recently announced that he will be seeking office in the upcoming general elections. He believes he has widespread support across Guyana, but Vice President Jagdeo believes he is delusional.
“They have some website and the people and fake profiles voting on the website all the time and they show he is leading but that is done by people who are sympathetic to him and obviously some may even be duping him to even collect money from him,” Jagdeo told reporters.
The Mohameds have long said that the felt targeted and persecuted by the current Government. But Mr. Jagdeo said, the Mohameds are paying for their sins.
“How is that persecution, this is a criminal act, a fake invoice is criminal act by our laws unless we must change the laws to suit the Mohameds and this started a long while back, it didn’t started now that they announce, they like to play victim, victim they hope would give them sympathy among people and his announcement I think is calculative it is to save his own ass,” Jagdeo declared.
The PPP General Secretary said the PPP is not scared about Mr. Mohamed entering the political scene, since there will be no impact on the party’s support base.
“You see any evidence across this country that the PPP is afraid of the Mohameds electorally? Where you see a mass exodus of the PPP to him, where you see this mass exodus. In fact, people are moving to the PPP in droves now, you think they would endorse a party they believe would lose the elections and all of that they got great confidence in where we are going”, Jagdeo said.
Azruddin Mohamed has indicated that he will roll out his political party and his campaign soon. On Thursday he appeared in Court and was granted bail on charges of tax evasion and under-declaration related to the importation of a luxury car.
