Pensioners’ Electricity subsidy to be reintroduced this month; Money to be paid directly to GPL

The Government of Guyana has announced that it will be reintroducing the electricity subsidy for pensioners this month.

In a notice issued by the Government and the Guyana Power and Light company, it was explained that the move is to increase the disposable income of the country’s senior citizens.

The subsidy of $30,000 per year will be paid to GPL and credited to the account of the pensioner to offset their electricity bills up to that value.

GPL will use the listing of names of old age pensioners provided by the Ministry of Human Services, and match those names with its own data base in order to compile a list of persons to benefit from the subsidy.

The subsidy is applicable to an electricity account registered in the pensioner’s name. The Government announced that the provisions were already catered for int he 2024 National budget.

The notice explained that in the case of pensioners with postpaid accounts, the subsidy will be directly credited to their account, while for those pensioners with prepaid accounts, the subsidy will be placed in their account’s electronic wallet feature within GPL’s prepaid system.

The Government also said the initial phase of the subsidy should be rolled out at the end of this month and it has urged pensioners who do not notice the subsidy in their accounts to visit their nearest GPL office with their ID card to register for it.

The subsidy to assist pensioners to pay their electricity bills was first rolled out in September 2013 and over the years, it has faced delays and discontinuations.
