PNCR calls for full reform and end of political interference in Police Force

The Opposition People’s National Congress Reform, (PNC/R) has joined calls for the total overhauling of the Guyana Police Force, saying it believes that many of the problems plaguing the Force can be avoided with much needed reform and less political interference.

At a press conference today, Opposition Member of Parliament, Ganesh Mahipaul said it is the Opposition’s view that political influence in the Police Force has emboldened some ranks to be engaged in corruption while others are demoralized.

“The PPP knows that the Guyana Police Force is failing the people of Guyana, but the PPP own involvement in crime has made it impossible for it to implement much needed reforms. On the specific issue of Assistant Police Commissioner Brutus, many Guyanese are rightfully questioning how is it possible for any citizen, much less a politically exposed person like the Assistant Commissioner of Police to amass almost a billion dollars of questionable resources,” Mahipaul said.

According to MP Mahipaul, the Guyana Police Force has found itself in a position where it there is non-stop controversy involving many of its ranks.

“The fundamental and comprehensive reforms needed to overhaul to the police demand that all political forces that desire change must work to defeat the PPP at the 2025 General Elections since the crisis of governance in Guyana cannot be addressed by PPP since it is one of the main sources of the extant crisis,” Mahipaul noted.

The Opposition also communicated its position again that it will not support the appointment of Acting Police Commissioner, Clifton Hicken and said that any move to confirm Mr.Hicken will be illegal.

‘It is just sad that he happens to be in that position acting as the Top Cop, sitting in the chair with all the authority that comes with it and the Guyana Police Force really went down. The moral of the force is low and it is always in a big scandal like with Brutus and so many other allegations that is out there,” the Opposition MP said.

Just last week, Assistant Police Commissioner Calvin Brutus was hauled before the Court to face 240 charges related to fraud, money laundering and other financial crimes. He is currently on $6.2 Million bail on 30 of the charges. The remaining 210 charges are still to be read to him.

Mr. Brutus has maintained his innocence of the charges.
