PNCR responds to AFC’s list of demands for coalition

The People’s National Congress Reform (PNCR) has officially responded to the Alliance For Change (AFC), regarding its list of demands for a Coalition with A Partnership for National Unity (APNU) for the upcoming elections. The PNCR is the largest party in the APNU.

Two weeks ago, the AFC submitted its list of demands, which included the Presidential Candidate’s position and a 60-40 division of all positions in Government, with the AFC getting the 40%.

At a press conference on Friday, PNCR Executive, Ganesh Mahipaul said the party has tabled its response, even as talks continue between the two sides.

“Yes, we have responded, and we are having lots of communications,” Mahipaul told reporters.

He did not want to offer details of his party’s response, instead he indicated that the talks are progressing at this stage.

“The talks with the AFC are ongoing. In terms of where we are, I would like to believe that we are in a better position when we first started and I would go as far as to say that nothing is agreed to until all is agreed,” he said.

However, News Source understands that in its response, the PNCR has indicated that as the largest party in the coalition, it would have to get the Presidential Candidate spot. Additionally, the party has proposed a 70-30 split of positions, has indicated its willingness to have the Representative of the List post go to someone outside of the party and is willing to have the Attorney General’s position be made available to the AFC if the Coalition were to win the next elections.

In 2015, the APNU and AFC entered into a coalition based on the “Cummingsburg Accord”. The coalition won the 2015 elections. However, the accord was renewed for the 2020 elections which the coalition lost. Just after leaving office, the AFC walked away from the agreement when it expired, but maintained its seats in parliament and on the Regional Councils as part of the coalition.
