Police probing death of Linden pensioner found in street in Amelia’s Ward

Police in Linden are investigating the death of a 72-year-old man, whose lifeless body discovered was discovered on a road in Amelia’s Ward on Saturday.

In a statement, the Police said it was investigating the suspected hit-and-run accident that claimed the life of Randolph Braithwaite of Central Amelia’s Ward, Linden.

According to the police, Braithwaite’s body was found lying on the southern parapet at 3rd corner, Amelia’s Ward, with what appears to be lacerations, suspected to be injuries sustained as a result of a motor vehicle accident.

He was picked up by Police ranks and taken to the Linden Hospital Complex, where he was pronounced dead on arrival by a doctor on duty.

The police said they have launched a full investigation and ranks are working on all leads.

Braithwaite was last seen alive Friday night at around 21:00hrs.

At the time, he was hanging out with two of his friends at a popular shop in the community. He is believed to have died between 21:00hrs when he was last seen alive, and the early hours of Saturday morning when he was found dead.

His daughter, Vanessa Braithwaite told News Source, that while her dad’s body was found at 3rd corner, Amelia’s Ward, his dentures, wallet and slippers were discovered in a completely different location in the vicinity of the shop where he was last seen.

“My dad was last seen alive at Fat Head shop; that’s his hang out spot. He doesn’t live far from there. So, when I was told it was a hit-and-run, I thought it was between the shop and his home but when I went to the scene it was completely away from where he was. It was not until I got to the scene and heard he had on no footwear, that I became even more suspicious and started walking the route with the police. We then found his slippers, bag and dentures obliquely opposite the shop he was last seen. There were signs of a scuffle,” the grieving daughter told News Source.

The Guyana Police Force is currently reviewing surveillance video recordings in the community to trace Braithwaite’s last hours. In the interim, his daughter is calling on anyone with information on the death of her father to contact the nearest police station or her on 592-689-2523.

“All we need is closure at this point. I don’t know what transpired, if he was attacked and then hit or what. We are pleading with anyone with information to come forward. My father was very quiet and hardworking; he didn’t deserve to die like that…I’m begging for any information on the matter. Only last week he celebrated his 72nd birthday,” she said.

A post mortem examination on the remains of Braithwaite is scheduled for Wednesday, June 11, 2025.
