Moments after the signing of an agreement between the Guyana Teachers’ Union and the Government, President Irfaan Ali went live on Facebook, to announce that he was pleased with the agreement.
In his video statement, the President said teachers should look at the entire package being offered to them, and not just the salary increases.
“I am therefore very pleased that the union—the President of the Union and his team as well as the team from the Ministry of Education were able to successfully conclude an agreement that would cover the years 2024, 2025 and 2026. My government remains strongly committed to our education sector’s revolution, modernization and transformation,” the President said.
Under the agreement, teachers will get a 10% salary increase for this year, along with an 8% increase for next year and a 9% increase for 2026.
The President said the increases must be examined in totality, explaining that the increases come with an adjustable clause, which says that if there is a higher increase announced for the public service, the teachers will get that higher increase.

In addition, holders of Doctoral degrees will receive an additional $32,000 allowance on their salaries, while holders of a Masters degree will get an extra $22,000 on their salaries.
“These teachers will benefit from these allowances from the first time in the teaching profession. The station allowance would also see an increase of 108%, that is the highest station allowance of increase. Headteachers for “A” category school will have a 11% in station allowance while headteachers in “B” category schools will have a 23% in station allowance and headteachers in category “C” schools will have a 39% in station allowance,” the President noted.
The President said the number of duty-free concession given to teachers will also be increased.
“In this agreement we have increased the number of concessions that will be granted by 50% in addition to the policy that all teachers who hold substantive appointment as a senior master/mistress, or above within three years of retirement and has not receive a previous duty-free concession is entitled to a duty-free concession for one motorcar up to 1500cc,” the President said.
