President lays out “bountiful” and security conscious plans for Essequibo

President Irfaan Ali over the weekend laid out a number of programmes he said his government has in the pipeline for the Essequibo region, which he believes will boost productivity, increase disposable income and improve the standard of living through upgraded health and education facilities.

Speaking during his party’s fund-raising concert in Anna Regina, the President said the opportunities are bountiful for Essequibo in the coming years, and Government is putting plans in the place to ensure that everyone in the region benefits.

“The years ahead are filled with opportunities for Essequibo, only a few days ago, we signed a contract for another ferry to come to Essequibo and by September, you will have another ferry servicing Essequibo,” the President announced to loud cheers.

Additionally, President Ali highlighted the need for the rice industry to grow into a more modern sector.

With the bulk of the rice farmers living in the Essequibo, he said a project has already been designed for two additional rice storage facilities for the region and a framework is being developed to guarantee a minimum price for paddy.

“We will be sending up a special fund, a co-investment fund, to help businesses, to help farmers, to help industries and manufacturing, because we know the potential of Essequibo. We have to invest here in processing facilities and when we come back in coming days and weeks, we will outline in great clarity our plans for his beautiful region of Essequibo,” the President noted.

He told party  supporters in Essequibo, not to be persuaded by persons campaigning in the region and making promises, telling them only his party can bring real change and development.

“We are ready to push to gears into overdrive, as we confront the next five years and if you think you have seen development, you have not seen anything yet, wait until the next five years and you will see what Guyana will be,” the President noted.

The President also noted that more emphasis will be placed on security for the Essequibo region to deter the threats from Venezuela.
