Seven years after she was charged for manslaughter over the death of her reputed husband, 36-year-old Melissa Cylus walked out of the High Court a free woman this morning, after the jury returned a not guilty verdict.
The husband, Julian Anthony Reberio, was found dead at the couple’s Soesdyke home on the 13th November 2018. A post-mortem examination found that he died by asphyxiation due to compression injuries to his neck.
The woman, who was pregnant at the time, had always maintained her innocence in the matter, although the Police had claimed that she had confessed.
At the trial this morning, the jury was directed by the Judge to return the not guilty verdict after Attorneys Yuborn Allicock and Travis Ferreira who represented the accused, successfully made a no-case submission.

The Attorneys submitted that the Prosecution had failed to establish its case since there was a lack of evidence tying the woman to the man’s death and several inconsistencies in the evidence provided by witnesses for the prosecution.
The jury was instructed to return the not guilty verdict.
