President Irfaan Ali on Sunday announced that the government is currently in talks with the stakeholders of the Berbice River Bridge Company to see how best the government can have a greater say in the operations of the Bridge.
Once finalized, he said, it will pave the way for the reduction of tolls to cross the Berbice Bridge.
This President’s remarks were made during the sod turning exercise for a new New Amsterdam Hospital in Region six.
“We are in the process at the policy level of formulating a plan to work with investors in the Berbice Bridge to have the government play a greater role—because now we have to carry the maintenance cost. All of this is aimed at making it much easier and cheaper for you to cross the Berbice River that is coming very soon, “the President said to loud cheers from Berbicians.
Boasting of his government’s achievement in the region, the President said the East Berbice Corentyne has been one of the biggest government investment in the last three years, explaining that his government has launched a massive infrastructure and housing drive in the region, which will see thousands of residents benefiting.
He said the investments are in response to the needs of the people of the region.
In addition it was announced that the government is also planning to have a new bridge constructed across the Berbice River.
“That is why we are accelerating the plan for a fixed-high crossing bridge across the Berbice River, just like the one we are building now in the Demerara River,” the President noted.
In addition, the President also announced that the Governments of Guyana and Suriname are in the final process of signing an agreement for a bridge across the Corentyne River.
