National Schools Table Tennis programme to launch in November

The National Schools table tennis programme which was initially slated to officially commence in September, will now launch in November, according to President of the Guyana Table Tennis Association (GTTA) Godfrey Munroe.

“ It is moving slower than we expect, nearing the stage of a lunch, what has been happening is that we wanted to train some of the teachers of schools within the respective districts; realistically we are looking at second week of November to roll it out”, the GTTA President disclosed.

Munroe added, “We thought training of teachers was quite a key element before the coaches start their work because to build capacity is needed for sustainability and also to have transfer of knowledge”

The President is hoping to have tables and other equipment being distributed to schools then there will be the hiring of coaches who will visit the schools a resident basis.

The programme is a collaboration between the Government of Guyana, through the National Sports Commission, Guyana Teachers Union (GTU), GTTA and the Guyana Olympic Association (GOA), who have funded the tables and rackets.

The programme will cater for 106 schools across eleven districts in six regions (3, 4,5,6,7 and 10).

Munroe disclosed that training has already been completed in regions three, four, five, six and ten, with   region seven and the Georgetown district being outstanding.
