Norton elected PNC Leader by a landslide -early results show

Longtime member of the People’s National Congress Reform, Aubrey Norton has rallied to a landslide victory at the party’s elections winning in almost all of the voting districts, projected results show.

Norton entered the race as the preferred candidate for many of the party’s members and he never lost that support.  He picked up wins in Regions 1, 2, 3, 5, 6, 8, 9, 10, East Bank Demerara, Georgetown, and East Coast Demerara.

It was an almost clean sweep for the candidate who once served as General Secretary for the party. Opposition Leader Joe Harmon was only able to pull out a win in Region 7, which had a small amount of delegates.

Late on Saturday night, Mr. Harmon contacted Mr. Norton to congratulate him on winning the elections and promising to work together with him to move the party forward.

The party’s elections were done using a hybrid system at 13 locations across Guyana and in the US, Canada and the United Kingdom.

Based on information from the delegates, the voting went smoothly.  At Congress place, delegates gathered early to listen to the reports of the Leader, Chairperson and General Secretary before casting their votes.  Most of the speeches were delivered virtually.

In all of the speeches, there were calls for a more unified People’s National Congress that must embrace change and embrace the youths in the party.

The official results for the leader and other key positions in the party will be released later today.
