Woman dies after falling ill on North West ferry

A 53-year-old woman who was traveling from Mabaruma to Georgetown aboard the recently launched MV Malisha ferry died this morning, despite efforts to revive her.

The Transport Ministry has reported that the woman was noticed motionless in her seat on the ferry.  An alarm was raised and the ferry’s Captain administered CPR to the woman, resulting in her briefly regaining consciousness.

However, the woman slipped into an unconscious state again and emergency evacuation procedures were activated.

The Coast Guard was contacted and was able to dispatch one of its high speed vessels to the ferry, which was off the Essequibo Coast.

It was explained that the unconscious woman was rushed by the Coast Guard to a medical facility where she was pronounced dead.

A cause of death has not been determined and the Transport Ministry has indicated that in respect for the woman’s family, her identity will not be released.
