Government and Opposition bemoan unprecedented threats and aggression from Venezuela

Guyana’s Minister of Governance and one of the longest serving Members of Parliament, Gail Teixeria today said that the current threats coming from Venezuela is the worst that Guyana has ever seen.

During a contribution to the Extraordinary Sitting of the National Assembly on the Border Controversy, Minister Teixeira said Venezuela continues to advance its baseless claim with increasing menace , and in total disregard of the impact of its claim on Guyana and the wider region.

“In recent times, more so than ever before, the aggressive language, the insulting offensive language and the threat to us by Venezuela at this time is probably the worse that it has ever been in the history of this issue,” Ms. Teixeria said.

The Government Minister said while the threat from Venezuela must be taken seriously, Guyanese must not lose sight on the position of togetherness taken by the Government and Opposition. This position, she said, must be celebrated.

The Governance Minister said irrespective of the claims from Caracas, the togetherness of the people of Guyana on the issue, remains constant.

“So, this point here today, is one that we must cherish always, it is priceless. Not many countries have their government and Opposition coming together on one issue, we must not take it for granted, today is the day for us as politicians as Guyanese to stand united. We must recognize too that we have faced many challenges, and yet ironically, Mr. Maduro does not recognized efforts between various leaders of Venezuela and Guyana,” Ms. Teixeria noted.

And Opposition Member of Parliament, Khemraj Ramjattan noted that political leaders in Venezuela have historically used the border controversy to drum up support for political continuity.

Venezuela has national elections next year.

“And if we do not recognize what might be the motivations of Maduro and his team, making statements about referendum and all of that, means in my opinion that there is now a deliberate attempt to transfer their irrationality on to their countrymen, for purposes of ensuring, that probably they can be distracted from all the problems they have in Venezuela,” Ramjattan explained.

Mr. Ramajattan said Guyana pver the years, Guyana suffered greatly due to Venezuela’s approach and must now take all steps to ensure that it takes full advantage of the vast economic prospects that the Essequibo region offers.

“We must ensure that this bonanza that is Essequibo that is ours be exploited and we must not have confrontation from our Western neighbors to any extent. We must see also the flourishing of Guyana because the space must be allowed without any intervention from any dominant big player, call Venezuela, Ramjattan noted.
