Persons living in Co-op Schemes to be issued Titles and Transport for their properties -Labour Minister announces

Thousands of Guyanese who live in Co-op schemes with no formal documentation to show ownership will be issued with titles and transport, Labour Minister Joseph Hamilton announced today.

Contributing to the 2024, Budget Debates, Minister Hamilton said the Labour Ministry in collaboration with the Ministries of Housing and Legal Affairs have embarked on a project to ensure that every property owner in co-op schemes will be issued with titles and transports individually.

He said the situation in those schemes presently is that people have multi-million-dollar properties but have no form of documentation, and that puts their properties in jeopardy.

“Mr. Speaker, people have houses that are a $100M, and $70M properties that are useless to them and their family present, because they cannot approach a bank to borrow money on that property, that we are bringing to an end with this programme of ensuring that every citizen who has a property in a Co-op scheme, we will ensure that you get your transport of title, that is to empower you so that you can utilize your asset,” Hamilton told the National Assembly.

So far, the Minister said over one hundred persons have already benefited from the project and that government will be working to intensity it this year.

“Mr. Speaker, in 2024, this number will skyrocket, as a result of the action that will be taken by the Ministry of Labour in conjunction with the Ministry of Housing to ensure that all persons are granted their titles and titles,” Hamilton reiterate.

Account of his Ministry

On giving an account of the performance of his Ministry, the Labour Minister said 2023 was a good year for many Departments under his watch. He said training programmes which were initiated saw thousands benefitting and are now employed.

He said many of those programmes are expected to continue this year.

Further, the Minister reported that workplace deaths and accidents have also reduced, though more than twenty were recorded last year.

He said resolving issues of child labour and employer-employee conflict have also recorded some success over the past year. Minister Hamilton noted that his Ministry was able to recoup over $150 million for workers last year.
