Two youths missing, feared drowned at Unity Beach

Search operations for two youths who went missing while swimming at the Unity Beach in Mahaica yesterday afternoon continued into last evening, with no sight of them.

The missing young men have been identified as 20-year-old Navin Seenauth and 17-year-old Daniel Boodram. The two and another friend were reportedly swimming at the beach as heavy waves rushed in.

The friend who survived, Joshua Deonarine, told investigators that as they were swimming the tide became stronger as heavy waves kept rushing in. He said he left the water with his two friends still behind swimming. According to the youth, as he was putting on his clothes, he noticed that he could no longer see his friends, as the waves continued to rush in.

The young man said he ran back to his Unity village and raised an alarm. Residents rushed down to the beach and immediately launched a search operation, but could not find the young men. The Police and Emergency Services were also summoned to the area, and they too joined the search operations.

The search operations continued into late last night, with no sighting of the missing young men. In a statement last evening, the Ministry of Home Affairs said the Coast Guard will join the search operations this morning. Residents in the community with boats have also been conducting searches.
