One day after 14-year-old, Malika Hamilton, barged out of her Hope, East Coast Demerara home following a telephone argument with her father, her lifeless body was found in the Hope Canal.
Persons swimming in the canal made the discovery on Tuesday afternoon and it sent shockwaves throughout the closely knitted community. Scores of persons gathered as the tiny body of the teen was being removed. Some residents were moved to tears as the body was loaded into a hearse.
The teenager was reported missing on Monday evening, hours after she walked out of her home after a heated telephone conversation with her father.
Family members became worried on Monday night when she did not return home and they launched a search party along with residents of the community. That search came to a tragic end on Tuesday when the teen’s body was discovered.
A police investigation has been launched.
It is unclear whether any marks of violence were discovered on the body. Family members and Police investigators are now awaiting a post mortem examination to learn the cause of death and whether there may have been any foul play.
A relative of the young lady has reported to investigators that the teen had threatened to take her own life, but may not have been taken seriously.
