A 47-year-old Belfield Squatting area woman was found murdered on Monday.

An ex-lover is the prime suspect, according to the Police.

The Guyana Police Force last evening announced that investigations have been launched into the murder of Nazaleen Mohammed.

The woman’s lifeless body was found in a canal yesterday afternoon at Hope Lowlands along the railway embankment. The body bore a number of wounds, including a slash across the abdomen and slashes to the face, neck and ears.

She was pronounced dead at the spot as emergency services were summoned.

The mother was last seen alive yesterday morning when she left home for her brother’s residence in the Hope Lowlands area. The Police said her current partner is a fisherman and is currently out at sea.

The woman’s son told investigators that he received a call from his mother’s phone during the course of the day and it was her ex-partner who was on the line. The 32-year-old son also reported hearing his mother’s voice in the background pleading for her phone, before the call was disconnected.

That was the last time he heard his mother’s voice.

The Guyana Police Force has launched a search for the suspect but has released no details about the man’s identity.

Investigations into the gruesome murder are ongoing.
