94-year-old man dies in Bartica fire

A 94-year-old man died tragically in a fire that ripped through his Third Avenue, Bartica home on Wednesday afternoon.

The Guyana Fire Service has confirmed the death of Albert Hopkinson.

The man lived in the two-storey wooden house along with his daughter, Dawn Hopkinson.

Both father and daughter were pulled out of the burning building with multiple burns to their bodies and air-dashed to the Georgetown Hospital. However, the elderly man died while receiving treatment, while his daughter remains in critical care.

The Guyana Fire Service said its Bartica station was alerted to the blaze at around 1:20 on Wednesday afternoon. The Fire Service responded with a Water Tender and a Water Bowser and an 8-member crew.

The entire top floor of the building was gutted while the bottom flat was saved. Firefighters are still to determine a cause of the blaze.

The Fire Service has reminded persons to ensure they have fire safety equipment in their homes.
