Popular local photographer, Keron Bruce was today found guilty of the cyber crime of using a computer to embarrass and humiliate. The verdict was handed down by Magistrate Sunil Scarce, and comes more than two years after he was initially charged.
The charge was filed against him following a complaint by journalist Leroy Smith, who accused Bruce of being one of the persons behind the social media cartoon character, “Mudwata”, who had made a number of statements on social media to embarrass and humiliate him.
The journalist had complained that the “Mudwata” character in a number of its video postings had made false comments and accusations against him that were also vulgar and sought to embarrass him and damage his reputation and name.
Bruce had always maintained his innocence in the case and said he believes the charge was politically motivated. Two weeks he complained about the frequent delays in the trial and then the delays in the Magistrate arriving at a decision.
The Magistrate handed down his decision this afternoon and ordered Bruce to pay a fine of $3 million or face six months in jail. He has one month to pay the fine.
It is likely that he will appeal the decision.
