4.4 tons of cocaine found buried near airstrip in Region One

A joint operation between the Customs Anti Narcotics Unit and the Special Forces of the Guyana Defence Force with support of the US Drug Enforcement Agency, unearthed a massive cocaine find near an abandoned airstrip in Region One.

The operation began on Saturday as CANU and the GDF Special Forces carried out an operation at Matthew’s Ridge in the Region #1 area, which led to the discovery of the illegal airstrip.

In a statement, CANU said a search of the area surrounding the airstrip resulted in the unearthing of 4.4 tons cocaine, which carries a street value of almost US$200 million.

The cocaine was found buried underground in bunker-type pits.

CANU said the operation was triggered by reports of illegal flights coming into Guyana and landing at the secluded airstrip. The United States Drug Enforcement Agency (DEA) and other international partners offered additional intelligence information. One person has since been arrested in connection with the drug find, and authorities are searching for other possible suspects.

The Customs Anti Narcotics Unit said the seizure highlights the commitment of the Unit and the Government to combating the narcotics trade in Guyana and collaborating with international partners. Investigations are ongoing into the incident.
