Tourism Association calls for decriminalization of same-sex intimacy laws in Guyana

The Tourism and Hospitality Association of Guyana (THAG) has joined calls for the decriminalization of same-sex intimacy in Guyana, saying that its members have reported loss of potential revenue due to some draconian measures in the Sexual Offences Act.

Speaking during a Tourism Day event today, President of THAG, Omadele George, said member of the organization want several clauses of the Sexual Offences Act in relation to same sex relations to be repealed.

She said by getting rid of some of the laws on the books, Guyana can send a message that it is a non-discriminatory and welcoming society.

“So as long as our laws criminalizing LGBTQ+ people, tourist, friends, family, co-workers and the very close persons to us we may certainly have to reflect on what will that translates to. Guyana can no longer afford to fall behind not just because of attractive tourism numbers and to contribute to continuous flow as we continue to increase our national room inventory but the very human angle of it all, “the THAG President stated.

The THAG President said Guyana has an opportunity to signal that the country embraces its LGBTQ+ community.

She explained that globally the LGBTQ+ tourism market accounts for between 7-10 % of the total travel industry and because of the current laws which criminalizes same-sex intimacy, Guyana is losing visibility and much needed tourism revenues

“By alienating this market segment, Guyana is not benefitting from a potentially high spending, high frequency demographic. The global LGBTQ+ tourism market contributes to over $200b annually to the travel industry. The US LGBTQ+ market alone spends $65B annually,” George stated.

She said in light of Guyana’s growing prominence as a tourism destination, it is important to create a safe and inclusive environment for all visitors, regardless of sexual orientation or gender identity.

She said advocating for equality not only enhances human rights but also aligns with global tourism trends, where inclusive destinations attract diverse travelers and noted that tourism thrives where peace, security, and inclusivity prevail, and decriminalization will send a positive signal to international tourists and investors.
