Police Force denies transfer of Deputy Superintendent from Airport duties

The Guyana Police Force today denied reports that Deputy Superintendent Phiona Harris was transferred from her post at the Cheddi Jagan Airport over the wife of embattled Assistant Commissioner of Police Calvin Brutus, leaving the country following an order of the Court.

Mr. Brutus and his wife along with others are facing multiple fraud and money laundering charges before the Courts. The wife sought and got the Court’s permission last week to leave the country for medical attention. There were reports that there were efforts to delay her departure, but she eventually left.

The Guyana Police Force today said it recognizes and respects the ruling of the court, which permitted Ms. Aulder to travel overseas for medical reasons, and in keeping with the directive, due process was followed to facilitate her departure.

The Police said a discussion occurred between Superintendent Stephen Telford, Deputy Chief Immigration Officer, and Deputy Superintendent Harris, resulting in the necessary arrangements being made for compliance with the court order at the airport.

According to the Police, at no point did Deputy Superintendent Harris act outside of her authority or against established protocols, and contrary to the reports circulating, the Deputy Superintendent was not transferred and there were no transfer orders issued.

The GPF has also refuted claims that officers are being threatened with demotion, transfer, or criminal charges in connection with the matter.
