Senior Government sources have revealed that Guyana has received information from neighbouring Venezuela that at least three of the suspects in the shooting of six Guyana Defence Force soldiers in the Cuyuni river have been arrested and are now in the custody of the Venezuelan military.
The men were reportedly arrested by the Venezuelan military when they showed up in the bordering community of San Martin late last night with bullet wounds seeking medical attention. There are reports that at least one of the suspects has succumbed to his injuries.
The Venezuelan men, who are believed to be gang members, ambushed a GDF patrol that was on a resupply mission in the Cuyuni River, injuring six of the soldiers. The Guyana soldiers returned fire, forcing the men to retreat.
In a statement last evening, the Guyana Police Force said based on reports that it has received, the GDF boat was intercepted by two wooden boats carrying heavily armed, masked men.
The assailants circled the GDF boat and opened fire, prompting the GDF ranks to return fire, the Police said.
The injured GDF servicemen have since been evacuated from the area, as investigations continue.
