A 26-year-old Labourer from Land of Canaan on the East Bank of Demerara died on Monday after he reportedly jumped into the Demerara River and drowned. It is believed that the man was intoxicated at the time.
He has been identified as Vishal Narine.
A report from the Police stated that just before he ran down to the river and jumped overboard, he got into a confrontation with his family after they refused to give him money to buy alcoholic drinks.
The report stated that the man had been consuming alcohol since early on Monday morning and was heavily intoxicated when he got into a row with his family. His sister reportedly attempted to stop him from running to the riverside, but her effort failed and the man vanished under the brown water of the Demerara river after jumping overboard from a wharf that is currently under construction.
Family members and other persons from the area attempted to save the man, but the current of the water at the time prevented them from reaching him.
His body is still to be recovered. A full Police investigation is underway.
