Policeman drowns as boat capsizes during river patrol

According to a Police statement, Corporal Bartholomew, his colleague Constable Travis Bess and miner Devon Williams, of Annandale, ECD, were returning from a river patrol duty in a wooden craft, captained by Devon Williams, when mid-way in the river, the craft began to take in water from the bow and quickly sank.

A 39-year-old Police Corporal lost his life last evening after the boat he was traveling in capsized.

The incident took place at around 8:45pm in the Ekeruku river in the Mazaruni area.  The dead police man has been identified as Balgrave Bartholomew.

According to a Police statement, Corporal Bartholomew, his colleague Constable Travis Bess and miner Devon Williams, of Annandale, ECD, were returning from a river patrol duty in a wooden craft, captained by Devon Williams, when mid-way in the river, the craft began to take in water from the bow and quickly sank.

Bess and Williams managed to swim to shore but Cpl. Bartholomew was unsuccessful.

An alarm was raised and a search team comprising of residents combed the area. His lifeless body was found this morning, in the sAME river.

The body has been transported to the Bartica Hospital Mortuary for a post mortem examination tomorrow.

 Commander ‘F’ Division (Interior locations) Senior Superintendent R. Budram along with Pastor Lennox Rankin of the Guyana Police Force Cops and Faith Community Network and a party of police ranks visited the relatives of the deceased and offered their condolences earlier today.
