A 48-year-old, D’ Field Sophia woman, who was traveling along the Puruni river in Region 7 to begin a new job, is presumed dead after the boat that she was in, capsized on Saturday.

The woman has been identified as Barbara Hunte.  The incident reportedly took place sometime on Saturday morning.

Hunte left her Sophia home on Friday for the interior trip after she was hired by a Campbellville mining company as a Chef for a new mining camp in the Cuyuni area.

According to reports, while Hunte and the other new workers were making their way through the Puruni river, the boat capsized and threw everyone overboard. The other persons were rescued but up to late this afternoon, Hunte’s body had not been recovered.

The woman’s daughter, Tamika Tappin, told News Source that she has been provided with very little information about what exactly took place. She said her mother, who would have been celebrating her 49th birthday in a few weeks, never traveled to the interior before but was excited to start the new job after she got the call late last week.

News Source understands that Police from the Bartica area and other neighbouring communities have since traveled to the area to begin a full investigation.
