28-year-old drowns at Lake Mainstay in Essequibo

The Police in the Pomeroon/Supenaam region in Essequibo are investigating the drowning death of 28-year-old labourer, Deon Baird from the same community.

The man reportedly went to the Lake Mainstay Resort on Monday and drowned while swimming by himself.

He was last seen alive by his mother, who told investigators that he left home on the holiday morning at around 11 to hang out at the resort.

The man’s mother told investigators that she became concerned about him after realising he never returned home.

His sister visited the resort on Tuesday morning to seek information and noticed the man’s body floating in the lake. An alarm was raised and the body was retrieved. He was pronounced dead on the scene.

The Police said there were no marks of violence on his body, but a number of persons were questioned. The bartender told investigators that the man had been at the bar at the resort drinking alcoholic beverages, but he did not notice when he moved away as he was tending to other customers.

Additionally, video recordings from surveillance cameras in the area are to be probed.

The investigation is ongoing.
