As the investigations continue into this morning’s devastating fire that gutted the 33-year-old Mae’s Private School, the administration of the school has revealed that the building which housed the various levels of the school was uninsured.
The school’s administration explained that the building was in the process of being insured, but the documentation was not yet finalized, leaving the property uninsured.
A cause of the fire is still to be officially determined, but from eyewitnesses reports, the fire might have been electrical in origin. News Source understands that teachers and parents of the school had raised concerns about old and faulty wiring in the school’s building and previous instances of those wires becoming overheated.
The administration said the school’s management, in collaboration with the Ministry of Education, is quickly moving to provide temporary accommodations for all of the students that were displaced.
The school, which had more than 1000 students enrolled, said parents are advised to maintain contact with the class teachers for their children to stay abreast of all ongoing developments, as they become available.
Education Minister Priya Manickchand in a statement said she is aware that the school recently changed ownership. She denied reports that surfaced on social media that she and her her sister were among the new owners. She said from information she received, the school is now owned by the Sugrim family.
The Mae’s School was started in 1992 by Mayfield French Rodrigues, who announced last year that the school had changed ownership.
