The Ministry of Education has announced that the eve of the closure date for schools will now be known as “Report Card Day”, and teachers will have to complete and distribute the report cards for students on that day.
In a memo to Education Officers and Headteachers across the country, Chief Education Officer, Saddam Hussain, said the report cards should be completed and handed over in a timely manner. He said the Education Ministry has been receiving lots of complaints from parents about their children not being provided with report cards at the end of the school term.
He said with effect from the current school term, on “Report Card Day”, teachers will be expected to distribute completed report cards/booklets to parents. Additionally, they will be required to put systems in place to discuss the strengths and weaknesses of the child with the parents on the same day.
Teachers are also being encouraged to ensure parents/guardians sign when they are uplifting the child’s report card.
In the case of booklets that cover more than one term, parents will be expected to return those booklets to the school by the second week of the new school term.
The Ministry of Education also wants the schools to ensure that all assessments are completed by teachers on “Report Card Day”.
In a Facebook post, Minister of Education Priya Manickchand said the Education Ministry has listened to the concerns and complaints of parents and has now moved to address the issue.
