More than 30 persons are now jobless following the massive fire that ripped through Regent Household Electronics on Wednesday afternoon.
One day after the blaze, the owner of the mega store, Shaheed Hamid, along with many of his employees, returned to the scene as firefighters continued to douse the rubble.
Hamid did not speak to News Source, but his son confirmed that more than 30 employees have been affected by the fire.
The cause of the massive inferno remains unknown.
Chief Fire Officer Gregory Wickham told News Source today that an investigative team has launched a full probe into the cause of the blaze, even as the Fire Service remains in firefighting mode.
It was explained that given the magnitude of the fire, the investigation could take weeks.
It took the Fire Service more than three hours to bring the fire under control, with mopping-up operations stretching into late last night and continuing today.
“Firefighters remain on the scene conducting mopping-up operations. Smoke may continue to emanate from sections of the structure due to the presence of highly combustible materials and residual heat within the debris,” the Fire Service said in a statement.
The Fire Service confirmed that a total of seven firefighting trucks were deployed from the Campbellville and Eccles Fire Stations, as well as Fire Service Headquarters, to assist with Wednesday’s operation.
It said that through swift and coordinated firefighting efforts, the blaze was brought under control and prevented from spreading to nearby structures. However, the building and its contents were completely destroyed.
As the mopping-up operations continue, the Fire Service is urging members of the public to avoid the immediate area and allow firefighters to safely complete their work.
