President announces free Bridge crossings from August 1, 2025

As members and supporters of the People’s Progressive Party gathered at the Babu Jaan Memorial Site to commemorate the birth anniversary of the party’s late founder, Dr. Cheddi Jagan, President Irfaan Ali announced that from the 1st August 2025, commuters using the Demerara Harbour Bridge, the Berbice Bridge and the Mackenzie-Wismar Bridge in Linden will no longer have to pay a toll.

The President’s announcement comes just months after he initially unveiled the free crossing plan. At the time of the original announcement, he stated that the toll-free crossing would have come on stream when the new bridges were in place.

However, today’s announcement of a start date has paved the way for the measure to take effect before the completion of any of the new bridges that will replace the current ones.

All three bridges currently generate significant earnings.

During today’s Babu Jaan rally, Vice President Bharrat Jagdeo also announced that the Government will continue with another round of cash grant for citizens after the upcoming elections. No date has been set for the elections that are set to take place this year.
