Linden Mayor hammers Police over provocative and deadly actions that claimed lives of two young men

Mayor of Linden, Sharma Solomon is placing the escalation of tensions in Linden directly at the feet of the Guyana Police Force, saying that the actions of the Police in the region, yesterday and today have been highly provocative.

Tensions spilled over in Linden today after the Police killing of 21-year-old Ronaldo Peters yesterday.

The police issued a statement on the killing, but their version was contradicted by a CCTV video which surfaced.

Today, residents of the Linden community protested the killing of Peters, but the protest too turned deadly after another young man, Keon Fudgenay aka “Dan” was shot dead by the police.

The Mayor of Linden told reporters this afternoon that the police cannot de-escalate a situation with the use of live rounds.

“There is no way a second young man should have been shot more so to lose his life with live rounds, it is most unfortunate that this is the de-escalating ability of the Guyana Police Force to further escalate the matter, what we are seeing here is not a result of the community, this is a direct result of the police action and behaviour,” the Mayor told reporters.

Solomon said the two Police officers involved in the shooting incidents are known to the community and were involved in other incidents previously.

“By now, Linden should understand what is happening in this community, nowhere else in this country, you got unrest or people with disagreement and people come and kill them, it only happens in Linden,” Solomon observed.

Both President Irfaan Ali and the Minister of Home Affairs have called for calm in Linden and promised a thorough investigation into the mater.

A number of Opposition Parliamentarians are on the ground and have called for a swift independent investigation into the matter.
