Independent probe and not local police probe must be conducted into Adriana Younge’s death -Norton

Opposition Leader Aubrey Norton is demanding that the Guyana Police Force stays away from investigating the death of 11-year-old Adrianna Younge, as he called for the family’s request for an independent international probe to be honoured.

At a press conference this afternoon Vice President, Bharrat Jagdeo could not directly say whether there will be an international investigation, but he explained that the President has promised an investigation.

In an earlier statement this morning, the Opposition Leader said in addition to the independent probe of the young girl’s death, there is also the need for a full inquiry into the operations of the Police Force.

“We demand a proper investigation into the death of Adrianna Younge and this investigation must have respectable international investigators. We cannot allow the Guyana Police Force to investigate itself, we also demand an international inquiry into the Guyana Police Force,” Norton said.

While the President has pleaded with citizens to allow the process to work, Mr. Norton believes that the Government is not treating the issue with the seriousness it deserves.

“Unfortunately, the government is operating like if all is well, but all Guyanese know all isn’t well. There hasn’t been a proper investigation into this crime, to tell us the child drowned is inadequate, it doesn’t tell us how the child drowned, or who committed the crime and no one has been brough to justice, in fact, we do not even know if those who the police force claims to have arrested are still in police custody,” Mr. Norton stated.

According to the Opposition Leader, the Police Force has shown that it is incompetent and sometimes complicit in crime. He said the Opposition will ensure that this particular matter is not swept under the carpet. He said the “politicization” of the Guyana Police Force must be addressed.

“We will depoliticize the Guyana Police Force, because we are well aware that it is politicized and is being used against the people of Guyana. It is our intention to improve the training of the Guyana Police Force, both at home and abroad with special emphasis on improving the investigative capacity of the Guyana Police Force,” Norton promised.

The Opposition Leader has been lamenting the current state of the Guyana Police Force, highlighting its many ills and issues that affect its operations.
