Adriana Younge’s family make plea for peaceful send-off and no protests

With many of their questions about her death still unanswered, the family of little Adriana Younge is preparing to bid their final goodbye on Monday.

Adriana, who was found dead two Thursdays ago at the Double Day Hotel one day after she was reported missing, will be laid to rest on Monday. Her family has requested that there be no protests for her funeral and that they be allowed a peaceful and respectful sendoff for their angel.

In a social media post, her Aunt explained that it has been brought to the family’s attention that persons are planning to protest the funeral and make attempts to stop the burial until another post-mortem is done. She said the family does not agree to such actions and will bury Adriana in a peaceful manner on Monday.

“Honour Adriana and the wishes of her family, no protests”, the Aunt, Amika Lewis stated.

The statement from the family came as a second independent post-mortem examination was being sought with another foreign pathologist being brought in. However, those plans appeared to have been shelved as the family seeks to begin the long road to closure and goodbye.

The funeral service will take place at the Vergenoegen Rice Mill Tarmac after a first stop at her former home. The burial will take place at the Vergenoegen cemetery.

On Monday, a post-mortem examination conducted by three foreign pathologists concluded that the child died by drowning. She was discovered dead in the pool of the Double Day Hotel at Tuschen last Thursday, one day after she went missing at the same hotel. The family had stated that the pool was searched, but that they were blocked from doing detailed searches of the hotel.

After her body was discovered, widespread protests started with roads being blocked and fires being set. The entire hotel was gutted by fire along with the home of the owner, who was taken into custody.

The Guyana Police Force has come under fire for bungling the initial investigation into the child’s disappearance by releasing incorrect information. Two police ranks have since been fired, while the Officer who was in command of the region at the time has been sent on administrative leave.

The young girl’s death led to days of protest across the country, and eventual reflections on her life and death through candlelight vigils.
