Ministry of Health probing 12-year-old boy’s death from Dengue Fever complications

The Ministry of Health has launched a probe into the death of a 12-year-old boy from Skeldon, who passed away following complications that were reportedly related to dengue fever.

The Berbice region has recorded more than 300 new cases of Dengue fever in the past month alone.

According to a statement from the Ministry of Health, it is deeply concerned about the circumstances surrounding the death of the 12-year-old, Lokesh Ibrahim.

The Ministry has launched a full investigation into the events leading up to his death, including the handling of the case by medical practitioners at the Skeldon Hospital.

A three-member team, comprising the Chief Medical Officer, Dr. Narine Singh; Internal Medicine Specialist, Dr. Shazeema Shaw and Mr Shiek Amir, General Surgeon, has been appointed to lead the investigation.

The Health Ministry has promised that the investigation will be thorough and transparent, and it will take action based on the findings.

News Source understands that a post-mortem examination conducted on the remains of the child found that he died from kidney and lung failure, internal bleeding and swelling of the brain.

The family of the child has indicated that when he took ill and was taken to the hospital, he was administered saline, but his situation reportedly worsened by the next day. There are reports that a second child in Berbice has since died from dengue complications.
