KLM Royal Dutch Airlines, will officially begin its Guyana service today. The Dutch Airlines announced last November that it will be adding the Georgetown route into its global network.
At a launching event to mark the occasion last evening, KLM’s Regional Manager Dutch for the Caribbean and Suriname Dirk Buitelaar, expressed confidence that Guyana will become a key destination within its network and said the airline is looking forward to playing a key part in the continued development of Guyana.
“As Guyana experiences remarkable growth especially in energy, eco-tourism and infrastructure, KLM Dutch airlines are proud to be a bridge for business, for tourism and for diplomatic opportunities. Our commitment to this route is not just about flying and aircraft between our two-cities, it is about stimulating our economies, coming together bringing industries closer in order for the nations to grow,” Buitelaar noted.
The Regional Manager said a bold decision was taken to add Guyana to its route since Guyana has started to capture the world’s attention.
KLM is expected to connect Guyana to Amsterdam, The Netherlands, and other parts of Europe with two weekly flights operating on Wednesdays and Saturdays.
KLM will operate non-stop flights from Georgetown to Amsterdam connecting its customers to 21 destinations in the United Kingdom and 142 additional destinations beyond Amsterdam.
“The launch of the flight is more than just a new destination in global network of Air France and KLM, it’s a symbol of a connection between Europe and South America, between the Netherlands and Guyana, between commerce and culture and most importantly between people,” Buitelaar further stated.

Meanwhile President Irfaan Ali, who attended the event, noted that KLM’s entry into the Guyanese market will also align with the government’s efforts to enhance international connectivity, particularly with Europe.
“Four years ago, we had just about five carriers serving our country, today we have eleven carriers, we were connected only to six destinations, today we are connected to sixteen destinations. These connections and these things don’t happen by accident, you have to have confidence in the economy and the system, you have to have confidence in the government and policy making environment,” the President noted.
