Presidential Candidate of the APNU, Aubrey Norton, has unveiled a plan that would see every Guyanese who is 18-years-old or older, earns less than $300,000 to $400,000 per month and not being previous owners of a house lot being allocated a free house lot under an APNU-led government.
At a rally in the town of Lethem in Region 9 on Tuesday night, Mr. Norton said the move forms part of a plan by his party to empower people and put them first in all of the party’s plans.
“One of the things we will do as a Government is to ensure that people who earn less than $300,000 to $400,000 a month get a free house lot. I want to repeat that for you. We commit to ensuring that any Guyanese above the age of 18, an adult who works for less than $300,000 will get a free house lot. You know, when we make these proposals, the first thing the Government says is that it can’t happen. When we said we would give cash grants, they said no. They turn around and give it when they recognize they’re in trouble. The President came here and announced a set of things after we would have said it. When we first said we would give pensioners $100,000, he said it’s not possible. He now announced he can give I think $60,000 or $69,000. Our position is clear. We want to put people first. We want to empower you, the people”, Norton told supporters in Lethem.

Mr. Norton said housing is a critical area for his party and would be for an APNU Government. He said the APNU has a plan to build houses for those who cannot afford to build their own homes, and allow them to be part of a rent-to-own initiative.
“They will pay rent, and when the rent covers the cost of the house, the house will become yours. That is what we call our rent-to-own scheme. We will develop rent-to-own schemes so that you, the people, can not just get homes, but get modern homes with the facilities that are needed”, Norton promised.
Mr. Norton also told the residents of Lethem that a Government under his watch would put better systems in place to ensure they get more involved in business and have greater access to Government contracts.
“The law provides for 25% of contracts to go to small contractors. We are going to create a pool of small contractors in the Hinterland that can carry out the work in the Hinterland. We believe that that is critical. We’re going to train young people to weld, mechanics, you name it. We want to see villages that have persons in them that can do all that the village needs. There is no reason why a mechanic has to come from the coast”, he said.
According to the APNU Leader, opportunities will be provided across the country for persons to develop their skills and themselves. He said it is unacceptable that 48% of the country is still living in poverty, and he therefore wants to create opportunities to get them out of their current situations.
