The Government of Guyana commissioned the new state-of-the-Art Tuschen Secondary School this afternoon on the East Bank Essequibo.
Describing the school as ‘second to none’, the President said the new school can match any such facility in Latin America and the Caribbean.
He said the school is not just another building, but it lays the foundation for a new Guyana, where every person, irrespective of their geographic location, must have an opportunity to a high level of education.
“What sense would it make to have all of the natural resources, but not have the scientist, the engineers, the economist, to multiply this value, what sense would it make, to have billions of dollars flowing into our economy but not have the children prepared to turn that wealth into opportunity, it would make absolutely no sense, one day our natural resources would be depleted and not be the extent we have it but the minds of children will never run dry or knowledge will be extinguished,” the President said.

The President said the Government will continue to support all forms of education, whether it’s the arts, technical, or vocational, and will construct facilities to aid in the development of students.
The Tuschen Secondary School is one of five secondary schools being constructed in the region. It will house some 800 students.
“I have been opening so many schools over the past months, that I simply lost count but that tells a story itself, it speaks to the number of schools that we are building, the schools that are being renovated and schools that are being extended and rehabilitated, but it is not only the building of schools but the integrating of our education system,” the President stated.
The one-flat, $864.705 million facility has several allied buildings featuring 24 classrooms, laboratories, a TVET centre, a canteen, a multi-purpose hall, a cafeteria, a sanitary block, fire prevention mechanisms, and an outdoor recreational facility.

Education Minister, Priya Manickchand, said the new school forms part of Government’s push to ensure universal access to secondary education.
“In three and a half years, we have built 67 Nursery schools across Guyana, in three and a half years we have built 45 primary schools across years and in three and a half years we have built or are building 42 secondary schools across Guyana,” the Minister said.
The Minister announced that by September 2026, children all over the country will be able to go to a high school close to their homes.
