One day after he was busted with 32 pounds of cocaine in a backpack, Charity, Essequibo resident, Alfred Andrew Paul, admitted to drug trafficking and has been sentenced to 36 months in prison. He has also been fined $22.2 million.

Paul appeared at the Suddie Magistrates’ Court on Friday where he immediately pleaded guilty to the drug trafficking charge after it was read to him. The presiding Magistrate handed down the sentence just after the guilty plea.

Paul was nabbed during an operation by the Customs Anti Narcotics Unit in the Essequibo Coast community of Charity on Thursday with just over 32 pounds of cocaine in his possession.

According to a statement from CANU, the operation was conducted based on information that was gathered about the presence of the cocaine in the area.

CANU said its agents were led to a location, where a search unearthed 13 brick-lick parcels of the cocaine, leading to the arrest of Paul.

The suspect was immediately taken into custody, as the cocaine, which weighed 32 pounds was confiscated.

CANU has been tracking down cocaine shipments from neighouring Venezuela. In many instances, the communities in the bordering area are used to get the cocaine in and out of Guyana.
