An operation by the Customs Anti Narcotics Unit in the Essequibo Coast community of Charity unearthed just over 32 pounds of cocaine on Thursday.

According to a statement from CANU, the operation was conducted based on information that had been gathered about the presence of the cocaine in the area. CANU said its agents were led to a location, based on information received, and at that location a search was carried out.

The search unearthed 13 brick-lick parcels of the cocaine, leading to the arrest of one person. The suspect was immediately taken into custody, as the cocaine, which weighed 32 pounds was confiscated.

The suspect remains in custody.

CANU has been tracking down cocaine shipments from neighouring Venezuela. In many instances, the communities in the bordering area are used to get the cocaine in and out of Guyana.
