Chinese Embassy urges Chinese business owners to open local bank accounts and follow regulations and laws

The Chinese Embassy in Guyana is urging Chinese business owners to follow the country’s legal and regulatory framework before opening their business.

The advice comes a week after, the Central Housing and Planning Authority and the City Council stopped the construction of a Chinese Supermarket on Brickdam for not having the relevant permits.

In a release today, the Chinese embassy said it recently met with the Guyana Government regarding lawful business operations of Chinese-owned and operated shops, and has urged those business owners to comply with the law.

The Embassy reminded that when setting up shops in Guyana, the operator must first apply for business licenses, and residence permits in accordance with the relevant laws of Guyana.

They should also open bank accounts locally and conduct business activities within the scope permitted by the relevant law of Guyana.

“Standardize daily business practices. Strictly control product quality, do not sell expired, unidentified-origin or counterfeit goods. Strictly adhere to relevant laws, do not engage in money laundering, smuggling, commercial fraud, or similar activities. Strictly comply with tax regulations; invoice customers accurately and pay taxes regularly; contribute social insurance for employees legal,” the Chinese embassy said in a statement.

There have been a number of Chinese Supermarkets and shops that have been opening across the country. Earlier this year, the private sector complained that the Chinese businesses are pushing local small businesses out.

The Chinese Embassy is encouraging Chinese businesses to shoulder social responsibilities actively as well as hire Guyanese employees legally.

The Embassy also wants Chinese owned businesses to cooperate fully with law enforcement inspections and if they encounter unfair treatment, they should handle the situation calmly and rationally while gathering evidence to protect their legitimate rights.

The Chinese Embassy also wants Chinese nationals involved in business to enhance safety awareness and strengthen risk prevention as well as equip their premises with necessary security devices, minimize on-site cash reserves, and hire security guards if necessary.
