The introduction of ankle monitoring bracelets is being considered by the Government as one of the new measures to strengthen interventions against domestic violence.
According to Minister of Home Affairs, Oneidge Walrond, new strategies are being considered to ensure greater safety and support for victims of domestic violence.
The Minister believes that the ankle monitoring bracelet would allow authorities to track the movements of offenders by sending real-time automated alerts.
“We are even talking about using ankle bracelets for when you have a protection order because there are still complaints perpetrators still violates the protection order, so when we put in the ankle bracelets there is an alarm that goes off when he is close to her, especially if it is found that the person was guilty of assault and abuse and has a protection order which provides a distance by feet or yards from the victim and when he does so that alarm goes off,” the Minister noted.
The Minister reminded of the consistent rise in domestic violence cases and said that government is looking at several interventions, including further legislative changes.

Additionally, she stated that there has also been a rise in instances where victims are eager to discontinue cases against their abusers.
Walrond stressed that while some victims are punished for this by the Court, she believes that there could be other interventions.
“So what we have to consider is that this is, most of the time this is the victim position and for us to bring measures for the violence raises its head and when a woman complain, we must be able to intervene in a manner—whether it is counseling or otherwise, so we are looking at these approaches, and we are resuscitating the community development group where you would have police in the communities,” the Minister stated.
The Home Affairs Minister said the establishment of a web-base App for domestic violence victims which would provide alerts is also being closely examined. She said overall, there is a need for more critical support for the victims.
