Nothing strange with Guyana covering cost for Prosecuting Attorneys in extradition case -AG Nandlall

A Ministry of Home Affairs document released by the Mohameds on their “Team Mohamed” social media page has revealed that the Government of Guyana is covering a US$62,500 bill for the Jamaican Attorneys who are working on behalf of the US Government in the extradition case against businessmen Nazar Mohamed and Azruddin Mohamed.

Attorney General Anil Nandlal has indicated that it is the normal practice for the state to which the request was made to pay for the Prosecuting Attorneys.

In a document from the Finance Officer of the Home Affairs Ministry to the Ministry’s Permanent Secretary, request was sought and granted for the payment of US$62,558.78 to King’s Counsel, Terrence F. Williams of Jamaica in the case of the Guyana Police Force vs Nazar Mohamed and Azruddin Mohamed for extradition proceedings for the period of October 2025.

The document also stated that the administration of the Guyana Police Force consulted with the Attorney General, who advised that the Police Force should seek the legal services of a team of experienced Attorneys to represent the Guyana Police Force in the extradition proceedings.

It further stated the three Jamaican Attorneys, Terrence Williams, Herbert McKenzie and Celine Deidrick were consulted and their services were obtained to represent the Guyana Police Force in the extradition proceedings. The document also noted the team’s experience in working on similar matters, as approval was sought for their payment. The document carried the approval stamp of the Permanent Secretary in the Ministry of Home Affairs along with a signature believed to be that of the same Permanent Secretary, Andre Ally.

The document noted that payment would be facilitated through the Bank of Guyana via wire transfer to the funds of Attorney Terrence Williams.

The leaked document was released by Team Mohamed’s on Monday night after Azruddin Mohamed accused the Government of using taxpayer’s money to fund the Attorneys that should be representing the US interest in the extradition case.

“Taxpayers are fully footing all of the bills for the hefty legal fees which will be in the excess of hundreds of millions of Guyana dollars, this includes their flights, their transportation, their security, their arrangements are fully paid for by you the tax payers”, Mohamed stated.

According to the US State Department’s Foreign Affairs Manual, in cases of extradition, the Fiscal Responsibility is to be borne by the Requested Country which is “The state to which an extradition request is made, and the state to determine if the fugitive is extraditable.”

In an NCN TV programme on Monday night, Attorney General Anil Nandlall confirmed that the Guyana Government would have to bear the costs for the Prosecuting Attorneys in the matter. He said there is nothing strange about that move.

“In this process because we wanted to insulate and avoid the process from the allegation of political interference, lawyers from outside of Guyana was brought in with the approval of the US Government and yes the Government of Guyana has to pay for that”. He said the same practice occurs globally.

The Attorney General dismissed claims by the Mohameds of political persecution and stated that the Mohameds have gone on a “disinformation” campaign as part of their fight against the extradition request.

In late October, the US Government formally requested the extradition of the father and son to face an 11-count indictment in Florida related to allegations of mail fraud and wire fraud and money laundering related to gold exports and tax evasion claims. The Mohameds have denied the allegations.

In support of the request, the Prosecuting Attorneys have presented the Court with the documents from the US Government seeking the extradition.

The Attorneys told the Court that additional documents in support of the extradition will be presented.
